MAGUIRE
This thread is taking me back. The rivalry between DX and The Nation was classic television. I remember D'lo and Xpac always putting on a good show feuding over the european title. Who can forget the Rock and Triple H feuding over the Intercontinental title? The 2 out 3 falls match and the ladder match they had at summerslam were both epic bouts. I remember the gang wars of 1997. Classic shit.

The Rock did say in his book that he was a bit insulted that the writers just threw him in the Nation because he was black.
What if there were more Samoan wrestlers around at the time? Hypothetically speaking What if Rikishi, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, Yokozuna, Haku, Umagu, Peter Maivia and others were active on screen? You think they would have embraced his Samoan side and had him join an "Island Boys" stable? That would have been cool too!

The WWE absolutely would have done something like that if more Samoans had been active in the company at that time. But, seeing as how The Rock had black blood, a black father, etc, they just put him in The Nation because of his skin color. "Well, he's black. Let's just put him in the nation and see what happens." Rock said he felt a bit insulted by that. If there had been an "Island Power" group at the time, they would have put him in that group with the same logic.

Funny you said that, however, because remember when Rikishi ran over Stone Cold? His alibi made no sense. He said he did it so The Rock (a pacific islander) could achieve great success if the WWE's "great white hope" (Stone Cold at the time) was out of action. Makes no sense because The Rock was already a 3 time WWE Champion at the time. He was having success anyway.

Still, this is no way to talk to your cousin, even if he is a psychopath who runs over people for you.

Rikishi's heel turn sucked and didn't make any sense. He wasn't good as a heel and to be honest he wasn't the best babyface either but since he could dance and party he was fun to cheer. Upbeat characters like Rikishi and Godfather are fun to cheer. They're all about a good time!

Ahmed is fooling himself here. He says that Vince wrote him out of the nation because no one would believe that anyone could beat those 6 big strong black guys as a group. I know he's lying because Mark Henry and The Rock were not in the group when Ahmed was.

I heard this before. I instantly knew what interview you were talking about.

There was really no point in putting Ahmed in the NOD anyway. He was already over with the fans and really popular at the time. The NOD was to help develop younger talent (Rock, D'lo, Mark Henry) and help them get over with audiences. Ahmed was already on that level.

They may very well have done so. Other than Dwayne, the only active Samoan at that time was Rikishi and he was playing a middle eastern character called The Sultan. Yokozuna was a famous Samoan (though they portrayed him as Japanese) but he had left the company a year before Dwayne arrived.

Funny you said that because I just came across this clip. It looks like this was around the time of the group's breakup. Rock was insulting them calling them candyasses and insisting on going to the ring alone. He changed his music too. Where was the Godfather? Had he already left the stable?

In watching Raws from late '98 lately on the WWE Network, you can see how the Nation slowly dissolved. After Summerslam, Kane and The Undertaker started working for McMahon and went on random chokelamming sprees. They went after D'lo at one point. The Rock tried to help D'lo out but was chokeslammed instead. D'lo ran away and left the Rock to his fate. Obviously this didn't sit well with The Great One.

The Rock started feuding with Kane and The Undertaker, who were main event heels. He still didn't like Stone Cold, Shamrock or Mankind, but he found himself teaming with them regularly to take on the Brothers of Destruction. With The Rock facing main event heels and constantly using catch phrases, he started getting big reactions. It worked.

Owen "retired" after "injuring" Dan Severn and returned months later as the Blue Blazer shortly after the Nation disbanded. D'lo and Mark Henry finally turned on the Rock in October, and they attacked The Godfather on Sunday Night Heat before Judgement Day. Godfather started bringing ladies with him in July of '98 and got more positive reactions. He rarely worked with the Nation anymore. His popularity increased after he was no longer associated with them.

Brown and Henry slowly turned into babyfaces themselves in early '99. Henry's infatuation and date with Chyna was hilarious. D'lo had a good angle with PMS where he was constantly doing favors for them. Eventually he introduced Ivory.

The dissolution of the Nation was gradual. Really, The Rock outgrew the faction, Godfather was doing better on his own as well, and Owen left for a while and came back as a new character.

There was a mini-Nation reunion on the WWE Network recently. Faarooq, Mark Henry and The Godfather shared plenty of memories. And The Great One was up to his old tricks.

This is the promo that officially turned the Rock into a babyface in 1998. He was still in the Nation, but distancing himself and cut a promo where he challenged Kane and The Undertaker, both of whom were heels at the time doing dirty work for Mr. McMahon. (Well, Undertaker was technically still a face and didn't want to work for Vince, but wanted a title shot).

Regardless, 'Taker and Kane were doing heel work at the time for the company's top villain, so The Rock put himself in a babyface position by challenging them. Plus, his catchphrases and elbow drop were beginning to catch on around this time, so the charisma he previously used to make him despise him was now being used to make him adored.

The crowd's reaction to this promo is what the writers wanted. They booed him out of the building and chanted "ROCKY SUCKS!" like they usually did when he made his entrance, but they were cheering him like a babyface when the promo was over. In the following shows after this, he got big pops usually reserved for Stone Cold Steve Austin.
